EXPLORING THE UNIT AND LOOKING AT THEMES LEARNING OBJECTIVE: TO READ AND RESPOND TO EXTRACTS FROM POEMS. TO EXPLORE IDEAS AND MEANINGS. The Poetry Anthology

Introduction You will become familiar with your AQA Anthology. You will need to know your cluster in detail. Many quotations will be committed to memory. You will not be allowed to take the Anthology into the exam with you.

Skills It seems like a lot, but you will become masters. Look at the FAQ sheet to ensure you understand the exam.

Themes In pairs, write a list of the different relationships between people. Share your list with others to build a full understanding of the word ‘relationships’. Then, do the same for ‘love’. Extension: have love and relationships changed over time? Consider famous lovers from stories or history.

Themes Love and relationships are all around us – film, television, magazines, and in our own lives. The poems in this cluster all look at these themes in different ways. The poets present their ideas on these themes through their language and imagery.

Task Look at these lines from some of the poems: 1. What relationship circumstances are suggested? 2. Choose one title: What do you think the poem will be about? What emotions do you expect to find in the poem? Do the words carry any connotations? Support: use the mind map to record ideas.

Powerful Emotions 1. Read the extracts on your table from the poems listed on the previous slide. 2. With a partner, discuss: Which event or emotion each extract is describing. Words or phrases that convey these events or emotions to you.

1. Try to match each extract with its correct title. Copy and complete the table to show your thinking.

Different emotions can be suggested in short extracts (joy, elation, loss, despair). Look at this example to see how ideas and emotions can be suggested in very few words.

Independent Learning 1. Look at a different extract from your sheet. Identify at least three features that suggest ideas and emotions connected with love and relationships. These may be single words or short phrases. 2. Write some short annotations to show how your ideas link to the ideas suggested by love and relationships, like in the previous example.
