iPad Functions Sleep/Wake button: This powers up the iPad, puts it in sleep mode, wakes it up, or powers it down. Dock connector slot: The dock connector cord plugs in here to charge the battery or sync with the computer. (The all-important) Home button: The Home screen helps you find just about anything. It displays all of the apps that have been preinstalled or that you have installed and gives you access to the iPad settings. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, push Home and you’re back at home base. You can also double-tap the Home button to pull up a scrolling list of apps so you can quickly move from one to another. Double clicking the home button will reveal open apps on the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen. Flick left to see more running apps. Simply tap an icon to switch instantly to that app. Swipe all the way to the left to adjust your brightness and sound. Click the home button once to close down the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen. Speaker: Surprisingly, this little speaker can generate quite a bit of sound. It is located on the bottom edge of the screen, below the Home button. Volume: A volume rocker is located in the upper right hand corner of the device. Tap up for louder and down for softer. Headphone jack and microphone: If you want to listen to audio privately, plug a 3.5mm minijack headphone into the headphone jack. There's also a tiny microphone that makes it possible to speak into your iPad to do things like make phone calls using Internet calling services, use voice recorder apps, or voice recognition. Cameras: Front- and rear-facing cameras are found on the iPad. They can be used to shoot photos or video. Be careful not to put your thumb over the rear camer when taking shots. Multi-touch Screen/Application Icons/Dock: All of your preinstalled apps and purchased/free app icons will appear on this screen. Sweep to the right and back to the left for additional screens. Sweep all the way to the left to search for a specific app if you can’t seem to find it. Certain apps will remain “docked” at the bottom of the “home screen.” You can alter this if desired.

You can now “move” it where ever you’d like it to go: Screen to screen To a different location on the screen Within a folder Press the Home Button to Save the Changes Creating Folders Touch and hold down an app icon until it wiggles. Drag it on top of another icon that will be in the same folder. A folder will appear with both icons. Name the folder. Drag other icons to this folder as desired. Drag icons out of this folder as desired. Press the Home Button to Save the Changes Deleting Apps: You are not able to delete apps from school iPads. However, on you own personal devices… Touch and hold an app icon until it wiggles. Touch the little “X” in the upper left hand corner that appears on the icon. Press the Home Button to Save the Changes

Switching Between Apps/Closing Apps How to Switch between Open Apps: When running an app, you can minimize it by simply clicking the Home button. To return to it, double-click your iPad's Home button to reveal the open apps on the multitasking bar at the bottom of the screen. Flick left to see more running apps. Tap an icon to instantly switch to an open app. How to Close a Running App: It is not necessary to close apps; however, there are instances where it might need to be done. Click your iPad's Home button to minimize the app if it's running. Double-click the Home button to see a row of running apps at the bottom of the screen. Touch and hold any icon until the icons start wiggling, then tap the minus sign on the icon of the running app to close it. Double-click the Home button to hide the row.

Special Characters on the Keyboard

Keyboard Shortcuts How to Type Special Characters: If you often need to switch between the on-screen Alphabet and Number keyboards just to type quotation marks in a sentence, you might appreciate these shortcuts. While on the Alphabet keyboard: ' (single quotation mark) => touch and hold the Comma key (,) " (double quotation mark) => touch and hold the Full-stop key (.) Turn caps lock on/off => double-tap the Shift key to lock, single-tap to unlock. Special letters not on the keyboard? => touch and hold a key, then slide to choose a variation. (See the screenshot). Need just a digit or symbol from the Number keyboard? => touch the.?123 key and slide to a digit or symbol key, and you're back to the Alphabet keyboard automatically. While on the Number keyboard: Symbols not on the keyboard? => touch and hold a key, then slide to choose a variation, or tap the #+= key to find out more. Often type an equation? => touch and hold the #+= key, tap a sign and you're back to the Number keyboard when you release the #+= key. Need just a letter from the Alphabet keyboard? => touch the ABC key and slide to a letter key, and you're back to the Number keyboard automatically.

Go to Settings on the Home Screen Select General Select Keyboard. Select "Add New Shortcut..." Enter a phrase, e.g. Excellent work; Well done! Enter a shortcut, e.g. ewwd Select "Save". The next time you type a shortcut, e.g. ewwd, the system will suggest to expand it to the phrase you entered!
