This is the 5 th Annual Metro Nashville Sickle Cell 5K in Nashville. The 5K was established to create a greater awareness in the Metro Nashville community about Sickle Cell Disease and to raise funds for patient care, social services, and research. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit individuals living with Sickle Cell. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals living with this debilitating disease. What is Sickle Cell Disease? Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels. Treatment of complications often includes antibiotics, pain management, intravenous fluids, blood transfusion, and surgery, all backed by psychosocial support. There is currently no universal cure for Sickle Cell Disease.
