2 What is the Colon Challenge?
The Colon Challenge is a 270-mile four-day cycle fundraiser following a colon-shaped route starting from Berkhamsted, Herts, and ending at Kings Cross. The route take us on quiet roads and paths through some of the most beautiful villages in Eastern England and on the final, shorter day we stop at the Emirates Stadium for the iconic Arse(nal) team photo – marking the end of the colon! - before completing the ride with lunch at a restaurant in Kings Cross. There will be around 15 riders, ranging from enthusiastic first-timers to experienced lead cyclists, including Colon Challenge founder, St Mark’s patient and trustee of St Mark’s Hospital Foundation, Paul Bouscarle. As a bowel cancer patient at St Mark’s Hospital, Paul founded the Colon Challenge in 2014, since when the event has raised over £150,000 of vital funds for the Foundation.

3 Who are St Mark’s Hospital Foundation?
St Mark’s Hospital Foundation supports research, education and training into the treatment of bowel disease, including bowel cancer. Our mission is to create… A future free from the fear of bowel disease The Foundation raises vital funds for pioneering research projects, including: BiCyCLE project: an acronym for Body Composition manipulation in CoLorectal cancEr. The idea being that we can manipulate the human fabric to achieve the best quality of life and outcome before and after treatment. Development of minimally invasive surgery: Increasing treatment options allows for therapy to be personalised and tailored for individual patients. This approach is highlighted through two recent developments at St Mark’s Hospital, FLEX and TASER. Robotic surgery: Aiming to improve the long term quality of life of survivors with minimally invasive surgery by reducing blood and tissue loss, scarring and recovery time. Facts and Figures Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK with almost 42,000 people diagnosed with bowel cancer every year. 146,000 in the UK are living with Ulcerative Colitis.
