Belief in the right of “Manifest Destiny”—The idea that expansion was for the good of the country and was the right of the country USI.8b

Before the Civil War, most industrialization (creation of factories) in America was in the North. Agriculture was common in the South. Even though equipment was produced and used more in the North, it still had an effect on the farming society of the South. The industrialization of the North created factories all across. These factories’ mass-produced goods, meaning they made large amounts at one time. Cities grew in the North like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, and Chicago and thousands of people moved there to work

Inventors, or people who are the first to think of or make something for the first time pushed industrialization forward. Inventors can also be entrepreneurs, or someone who organizes resources to bring a new or better good or service to market in hopes of making a profit. Entrepreneurs create factories and machines to mass-produce their good, or to make a lot of it.

Now lets learn about inventions from this time!!!

stations

Erie Canal

What does it do? Erie Canal- connects Lake Erie to New York City

Canals- make much easier to go on all the rivers

Why is it important? Canals are soon made everywhere to make faster for steam boats and travel on rivers

The First steam locomotive

What does it do? They make faster land transportation Railroads were mostly built in the industrial North

Why are they important? FASTER LAND TRANSPORTATION– A LOT OF INDUSTRY IN NORTH By 1869 the first transcontinental railroad was completed connecting the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast.

For example, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Whitney was from the North originally, but while he was working as a tutor in Georgia, he developed a simple machine that would separate seeds from the fibers of cotton. The machine was inexpensive and easy to make. It increased the production of cotton. The cotton would be sent up to the North to the textile factories (make clothing) and to Great Britain. As a result of increasing the production of cotton, Southern plantations needed more slaves to cultivate (plant and grow) and to pick cotton.

The Cotton Gin

Invented by Eli Whitney What does it do? – cotton gin is a device for removing the seeds from cotton fiber Took him 10 days to draw a plan for the machine His gin was able to clean 50 lbs. of cotton a day

Why was it important? It increased the production of cotton and thus increased the need for slave labor to cultivate and pick the cotton. More cotton = More slaves

Why was it important All of the cotton would be sent up on steam boats and R.R. to the Northern factories Northern factories would create the textile industry

Why was it important Creates textile factories in North for the Southern cotton

Another important invention was the reaper. Cyrus McCormick and a slave named Jo Anderson invented he reaper. Reapers were sued to harvest grain. They separated the grain from the plant stems. The reaper increased the amount of work American farmers could do. Jo Anderson was a slave on Cyrus McCormick’s farm. He worked beside McCormick at all stages of building and testing the reaper. Some said the two were more like brothers than slave and master. McCormick was an entrepreneur; he built factories to make all the materials to go into reapers and sold them for money.

The Reaper

Jo Anderson (a slave) and Cyrus McCormick worked to invent the reaper

What does it do? It cut grain from the fields Made it a lot easier and faster for farmers on the land plant much more seed because they could harvest it easier.

Why is it important It allows farmer to increase their production of crops (they make more crops!)

Cyrus McCormick was an Entrepreneur Cyrus McCormick had moved to Chicago, built a reaper factory, and founded what eventually became the International Harvester Company. He brings goods and resources to the market in order to make a profit

Robert Fulton invented the steamboat. This was a very important invention because it provided faster river transportation. The steamboat strengthened the connection between the Northern industries and the plantations and farms of the South. Cotton, tobacco, and indigo from Southern plantations could be transported up to the Northern factories to create manufactured goods. Fulton was also an entrepreneur.

Steamboat

Invented by Robert Fulton In 1807 he created the first Steamboat– the Clermont On August 7, 1807, Robert Fulton's Clermont went from New York City to Albany making history with a 150-mile trip taking 32 hours at an average speed of about 5 miles-per-hour.

What does it do? IT travels the rivers and canals much quicker than older boats!!

Why is it important Now the Southern Plantations can send their cotton to Northern factories

Fulton was an Entrepreneur He started to make steamboats and have people pay him to take their goods up and down the rivers!

All of this industrialization created large number of factories throughout the North. Many people now worked in the factories in the cities doing the same job over and over again. They mass-produced goods like the steamboat, the reaper, the cotton gin, and the steam locomotive. This created a divide between the North, which had many cities and factories, and the South, which was built on the large plantations and slaves.
