330 Minute Project Manager Introduction Passing the PMP Exam was difficult...wouldn’t it be nice to be able to maintain your PMP status and never have to take the exam again? January started your reporting period for all “newly-minted” PMPs…do you know what you need to maintain your PMP Status? In order to maintain your PMP status and avoid having to retake the PMP exam in the future you need to know the following: Criteria for Maintaining your PMP Status! What a PDU is! What activities qualify for PDUs! How and where to report your PDUs! What paperwork to keep for Audit purposes!

430 Minute Project Manager Objective of Today’s Session At the end of this session, you should be able to:  Understand the criteria for maintaining your PMP status  Know the definition of a Professional Development Unit (PDU)  Understand the 5 basic PDU Qualifying Activities  Know how and where to report your PDUs  Realize what paperwork you need to maintain in case you’re audited

530 Minute Project Manager Agenda  Introduction  Criteria for Maintaining Your PMP Status  Definition of a Professional Development Unit (PDU)  Five Basic Qualifying Activities  How and Where to Report Your PDUs  Paperwork You Need to Maintain  Conclusion  Appendix

630 Minute Project Manager Criteria for Maintaining PMP Status According to PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook... “…those who have been granted the PMP credential (certificates) must demonstrate ongoing professional commitment to the field of project management by satisfying PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements Program (formerly called the Professional Development Program).” Page 2 of the CCR Program Handbook

730 Minute Project Manager Overview of Requirements  PMP’s must accrue a minimum of sixty (60) professional development units (PDUs) during each CCR cycle.  The first CCR cycle begins on the date of initial certification and ends on December 31st of the third full calendar year after the first year of certification.  For Example: If you were certified in November 2005 your first CCR cycle will expire December 31,  Subsequent CCR cycles will be three (3) year terms starting on January 1st and expiring on December 31st PMP

830 Minute Project Manager Overview of Requirements (Cont)  Up to 20 excess PDU’s earned during the final (third) year of the current CCR may be applied to the next CCR cycle.  There are no minimum requirements for the number PDU’s earned in a particular category…but there are maximum restrictions by category per CCR cycle!  Have to meet your requirements within the CCR cycle  PMI will suspend/revoke the PMP Certification if CCR program requirements are not met.  Currently 12 month “grace period” to meet CCR PDU requirements  Effective January 2004 PMI will be charging a processing fee to renew your PMP status  $75 (US) Members  $150 (US) Non-members “All Applications for Certification Renewal sent to PMPs on or after 1 January 2004 will require the inclusion of the processing fee. If a PMP is sent the application prior to 1 January 2004 and returns it after the implementation date of the processing fee, he/she will not be required to submit payment with their application.” - to members, 4/4/2003

930 Minute Project Manager Agenda  Introduction  Criteria for Maintaining Your PMP Status  Definition of a Professional Development Unit (PDU)  Five Basic Qualifying Activities  How and Where to Report Your PDUs  Paperwork You Need to Maintain  Conclusion  Appendix

1030 Minute Project Manager Definition of a PDU According to PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook... Typically, one PDU is earned for every hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or activity.* “The PDU is the measuring unit used to quantify approved learning and professional service activities. Typically, one PDU is earned for every hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or activity.* Fractions of PDUs may be reported in 0.25 increments following one full hour. For conversion purposes, one Continuing Education Unit (CEU) equals 10 PDUs.” Page 3 of the CCR Program Handbook *Emphasis in original

1130 Minute Project Manager Agenda  Introduction  Criteria for Maintaining Your PMP Status  Definition of a Professional Development Unit (PDU)  Five Basic Qualifying Activities  How and Where to Report Your PDUs  Paperwork You Need to Maintain  Conclusion  Appendix

1230 Minute Project Manager Five Basic PDU Categories Category 1: Formal Academic Training  PDU’s may be earned by taking an academic course after PMP Certification  Courses must be offered for degree credit  Courses must be related to Project Management  One (1) hour of degree credit for a 15-week semester earns 15 PDUs  One (1) quarter semester hour earns 10 PDUs  Each course must be submitted on a separate CCR Activity Reporting Form  Documentation Required: Transcript or grade report indicating a passing mark.  PMI CVC does NOT offer PDUs in this category!

1330 Minute Project Manager Five Basic PDU Categories Category 2: Professional Activities and Self-Directed Learning  A predetermined number of PDUs may be earned by participating in specified professional activities  Speaker on a project management topic (“30 Minute PM”) See Appendix for “Guide to Category 2 Activities”  Documentation Required: Copy of publications, sample education materials, or program agenda etc.  One (1) PDU may be earned for each documented hour of self- directed learning that enhances project management knowledge or skills.  Documentation Required : Self-directed Learning Activities Worksheet in addition to the Activity Reporting Form. (See CCR Handbook for Details.) PMI CVC Provides Opportunit y

1430 Minute Project Manager Five Basic PDU Categories Category 3: PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.’s)  PDUs may be earned by attending educational programs  Offered by educational organizations  Provider is designated as a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.)  PMI CVC is listed as an R.E.P with PMI  Examples of qualifying programs Chapter Dinner Meetings (1 PDU) “Saturday Seminars” (4 PDUs)  Documentation Required: Registration Form, certificate or letter of attendance etc.  A complete list of R.E.P’s may be obtained from PMI at the PMI website under “Registered Education Program” ( ) PMI CVC Provides Opportunit y

1530 Minute Project Manager Five Basic PDU Categories Category 4: Other Provider  PDUs may also be earned by attending educational programs offered by organizations not registered with PMI  Self-calculate the number of PDU’s with the following formula One (1) contact hour of learning relevant to project management within a structured activity or course equals one (1) PDU Example: Your company (a non-R.E.P.) provides a a half day seminar on programs and projects within the company and there is an hour session specific to Risk Management being conducted by an outside, industry-expert on Risk Management. The rest of the day is generic to the business and not project management-specific. You would calculate the one hour spent on Risk Management as 1 PDU.  Documentation Required: Maintain a copy of the registration form, certificate or letter of attendance, and a brochure or course materials indicating the subject matter covered and the qualifications of the instructor or course content..

1630 Minute Project Manager Five Basic PDU Categories Category 5: Service to Professional or Community Organizations  A maximum of 20 PDUs may be earned through professional service or by providing non-compensated professional PM service to non-employer or non-client customer groups  Serve as a voting-officer on the CVC Board of Directors Minimum 3 months participation but less than 6 months (2 PDUs per calendar year) More than 6 months participation but less than 12 months (5 PDUs per calendar year) 12 months participation (10 PDUs per calendar year)  Serve as a non-voting Director or committee member: Minimum 3 months participation but less than 6 months (1 PDUs per calendar year) More than 6 months participation but less than 12 months (3 PDUs per calendar year) 12 months participation (5 PDUs per calendar year)  Documentation Required : Letter or certificate from the organization acknowledging the participation PMI CVC Provides Opportunit y

1730 Minute Project Manager Five Basic PDU Categories  You only need to average 20 PDUs per year to meet your CCR Program Requirements  PMI CVC has MANY opportunities to meet / exceed this goal!  CAT 1: None  CAT 2: 20+ Opportunities / Year PMP Certification Seminar Instructor VCU Speakers  CAT 3: 20+ Opportunities / Year Chapter Dinner Meetings (10 / year) Saturday Seminars (12-14 / year)  CAT 4: None  CAT 5: Upwards of 10 Opportunities / Year Board of Directors Voting Members Non-voting Board Members and Committee Members Take advantage of the opportunities!
