St Mary’s College Information Evening The New Zealand Curriculum focuses on 21st century learning, ensuring learners are equipped to participate in and contribute to their own society and the wider world. Parent Presentation, BYOD – 28/10/15 Genevieve Herder –

●We are part of an ever-changing world of technology and communication. Globalisation has resulted in the breakdown of geographic boundaries. ●The nature of learning is changing – students learn and access information regardless of their geographic location. ●Learning is no longer limited to the knowledge of the teacher and the boundaries of the classroom. Education in a global context

●We cannot imagine what the social, economic, cultural and technological world will look like in ●We do know that we need to prepare students to seize opportunities offered by new knowledge and technologies. ●At St Mary’s College we encourage life-long learning with an emphasis on critical thinking and collaborative learning, and in doing so create a learning culture that prepares students for the future. Future Ready Students

●Provide students with the best educational tools and information available through Google Apps for Education: document creation, storage, submission of work, feedback and communication with their peers and classroom teachers. ●Devices will be used to communicate and collaborate while developing and enhancing critical thinking and creativity in the classroom and beyond. ●Personalised learning, providing feedback and feedforward, to make a real difference for each student. Advantages of BYOD

●Every student will be set up with a gmail account, this provides access to their Google Drive and Google Apps. Students will access the internet through the St Mary’s College wireless network. ●By having an account within the security and control of the St Mary’s College Domain, students can work collaboratively on documents with their peers and their teachers. Google Apps for Education ~ GAFE

It is important that students, parents and St Mary’s College work together throughout this BYOD journey. ●Student: charging, keeping device secure, breakage (covered by owner’s insurance), using it only for appropriate tasks at the invitation of the classroom teacher. ●Teacher: providing advice on how to be a good digital citizen – promoting safe and responsible use, creating the conditions that enhance student learning. ●School: reliable wireless network, filtering content/sites to protect all users, monitoring use of the internet and checking that activites carried out on student devices are appropriate. Responsibilities
