Internet was created to allow people to communicate in an easier way and to reach information in a faster way. It’s a fact that Internet has changed our lives but our main concern is its impact on Education. It may be a difficult task to measure this influence, so to begin with we’ll take into consideration several aspects.

Our context: Andalucía It was in 2003 when Andalucía started to include the introduction of ICT in education in order to get better life level and social equality and to improve competitivity. In this sense, the local government carried out a list of measures: The introduction of ICT in the school curricular projects ICT coordinators at schools Supply of different devices among schools Creation of an own browser: Guadalinex (Linux) Promoting technological training among teachers It was a slow process but we can say that nowadays in Andalucía almost every school assumes the use of ICT as one of the most important objectives

PROBLEMS As in every innovation there were people against the introduction of ICT in our classrooms. They were reluctant to use technology in their lessons for several reasons: It was easier to go on with the traditional method Using ICT implied training, usually out of school timetable Sudden huge amount of information about ICT: confusion, anxiety among traditional teachers Waste of time, looking for the most appropriate tool or website Believe/ assumption that students can use Internet tools better than us (teachers complex)

SOLUTIONS Show the advantages of using ICT: more attractive to students, more interactive lessons, faster feedback…. Promote training online optimizing time Reinforce the role of the ICT coordinator at schools as the person in charge of managing all the resources, devices and promoting the most optimal use of them. Clarify the goal of using a new tool and then ask ourselves what is this tool for, what can we do with it for our students and which benefits would they get by using it. Are they going to improve their level of knowledge with this new tool? Self-confidence; students may know how to use an Internet tool but they don’t know how to manage it. That’s our main task: LEAD THE WAY

OUR PRESENT At IES Las Banderas we work with students between years old, this means we work with digital natives. Our main challenge is to offer an education based on the acquisition of languages (english and french) and to promote the use of ICT. To reach our goal we try to make extensive ICT in every task we carry out, taking into account that some of our students don’t have the necessary motivation to go on studying or learning. The use of ICT in our lessons has increased the motivation of our students.

GOOD PRACTICES Google Apps GMAIL Communication between teachers and teachers-students DRIVE To store files in the cloud (docs, slides,forms…); it permits collaborative editing of docs. For teachers we use to share important information about our students. For students, we use it to create their Portfolio (we keep in shared files all their projects) GOOGLE CALENDAR It permits to create multiple calendars and can be shared. we use it to notify events and meetings among teachers

MORE TOOLS YOUTUBE It may be one of the most powerful tools in education but at the same time one of the most misused. We have to be able to manage the resources that we can find in it and make an intelligent use but not abuse. PREZI / PADLET / POWTOON / CANVA All these applications are part of our daily work with students. We encourage to use them to present in a different, creative and imaginative way their projects in every subject. They offer multiple frameworks, all of them very attractive for our students. SYMBALOO This is a useful tool to organize and categorize all the weblinks where we can find specific information about a topic, allowing us to create a personalized and virtual desktop.

As in the traditional method, Internet tools must be used with clear learning strategies that lead us to the chosen goals. We mustn’t lose our main objective: teach students to create, analyze, compare and take decisions. If we put more emphasis in the format rather than in the content we may overlook the main sense of teaching and learning.

OUR FUTURE Since the fact that none of us are digital natives and that Internet and web tools are present in every aspect of our lives, it’s important to put our mind in order. Internet is a versatile and valuable tool for learning and teaching. The most important thing is that teachers need to be prepared to use these tools effectively. Common sense is the key to lead our students to a good use of Internet tools to ensure a responsible and safe use of them.
