Biochemist Duncan Burdick 5/9/14 2 nd Hour

Introduction “Once we accept our boundaries, we go beyond them.” – Albert Einstein You may not have heard this quote, but it definitely inspires me to be what I want: a Biochemist. I got interested in being a biochemist because I want to be able to experiment with genes, modifying things at my will. Research List ◦ Cures to diseases ◦ How living things react to drugs/materials

Responsibilities - Plan and conduct complex projects in basic and applied research. - Manage laboratory teams and monitor the quality of their work. - Isolate, analyze, and synthesize proteins, enzymes, DNA, and other molecules. - Research the effect of substances, Such as drugs, hormones, and food on tissues and biological processes. - Present research findings to scientists, engineers, and other colleagues. - Prepare technical reports, research papers, and recommendations based on their research.

Working Conditions This career is both physical and mental, but indoors. I am required to much math and planning, whilst carrying out the experiment, which is physical. Of course, this is all indoors. The environment is basically a lab like you would expect: different containers and stuff to experiment with, a few computers and whatnot. Other than that, I do not know what else to expect.

Training/Education I need at least a bachelor’s degree, but a PhD will get me further. I do not have any plans on which college I’ll go, but I have U of M in mind. Right now in High School, I’ll be taking classes related to biology, chemistry, and other stuff related to that.

Job Outlook As for the employment rate, it is expected to grow 19% from 2012 to 2022, but the fast growth will end up in about 5,400 jobs over the decade. There is a strong competition for permanent research and positions at colleges/universities. I want to find the career’s openings somewhere close, but I do not know where to look. The only particular type of business I want to work at is something to do with creatures, experimenting for knowledge’s sake.

Money My lifestyle goals: - I want to be able to meditate, and calm myself. - I want to have my own lab, so that I may experiment while not at work. - I want to be able to camp and experience nature every once in a while. - I want to be able to vacation with my family. Average Earnings This career usually earns me around $84,005 a year, which does fit my lifestyle goals. What will my first purchase be? I’ll cross that road when I come to it.

Related Occupation Another career path I could choose would be an Microbiologist: Responsibilities ◦ Isolate and maintain microorganisms for study ◦ Plan and conduct experiments ◦ Identify and classify microorganisms found from environment or other animals ◦ Monitor effect of microorganisms on environment or other creatures Work Conditions ◦ Work both indoors and out, as well as operating scientific equipment. It is both mental and physical. Training ◦ I would, again, need a PhD in order to get this job. Which means, coming to this job is an easy transition. Outlook ◦ The job is projected to increase about 7% over the decade from 2012 to Earnings ◦ I would earn around $64,590 a year. I chose this career because it’s the next best choice, and if I do not enjoy the other job, I can always choose this; it has to do with little critters, so it’s pretty good. Maybe I’ll do both Biochemist and microbiologist.

Summary I feel like this job is going to be a really cool experience for me, and I like working with the equipment and that kind of stuff. I look forward to the genetically altering whatever I need to alter, as that will give me knowledge when I’m working at home, with my own creatures and stuff. Overall, this learning experience will change the world.
