Prepare students for the real world. Advancement opportunities come whenever a new position opens up or someone gets removed from another. ★ Use the latest information to perform research, classify materials, and help people see ★ Follow trends for seeking information Recommend materials to others ★ Organize information in order for others to obtain it ★ Manage staff ★ Develop and manage index databases and train users ★ Advancement: administrative positions (department head, library director, chief information officer) ★ Slower than average projected employment growth ✓ Job openings are expected to exceed the number of graduates from counseling programs ✓ Assist people with personal, family, education and mental health and career problems ✓ Advocate for students and work with other individuals to organize and promote the academic, career, personal, and social development of children and youth. ✓ Duties help children down the right path. ✓ To be there for students even if they don’t agree with them Skills and Abilities Needed Teachers must have good communication skills. Inspire trust and confidence. Able to motivate students Have an understanding of the students’ educational and emotional needs. ★ Communication skills ★ Knowledge of wide variety of scholarly and public info. sources ✓ Able to talk to children under pressure ✓ Able to lead people in the right direction ✓ Able to help people in need and be there for people Education, Training, and Preparation Time Needed The traditional route to become a public school teacher: complete a bachelor’s degree for a teacher education. obtaining a license. Many secondary school teachers get a degree in a specific subject. Licenses are obtained by the State Board of Education Competency tests required. ★ A degree in library science = main qualification ★ Experience as teachers for some state licensing requirements ✓ Based on occupational specialty and State licensure and certification requirements ✓ A master’s degree is usually required ✓ Strong desire to help others ✓ Able to work independently or as part of a team ✓ Follow the code of ethics ✓ Must possess high physical and emotional energy ✓ Must be able to deal with stress

2 Teaching (K-12) LibrarianCounselor Work Setting and Work Place The work place = the school, (elementary, middle, or high school) The work setting : Classrooms, offices, the school grounds, cafeteria stress, enjoyment, and tiredness are all part of the setting of being a teacher. (Some literal and some figuratively) ★ Much time behind desk or computer terminals ★ Sometimes lift and carry books ★ Assisting library users ★ Some work with staff, whereas smaller libraries will have one librarian with little to no staff. ★ Demanding/ stressful due to users ✓ Work place must be a nice place to help anybody ✓ The environment needs to be welcome to any person who needs help ✓ Need to be open to all Average Salary and Job Outlook The projected growth is growing as fast as the average employment. Job prospects are expected to be favorable, especially for teachers in math, science, and bilingual education. The average pay for teachers is $43,580 to $48, 690.
