Finding References That Sing Your Praises Jesse Stump

References: The Key to A Successful Resume Although commonly overlooked as being trivial, references are in fact a very important component of one’s resume. If chosen properly, references can be the difference between getting a job and getting passed up. Here are some important tips in going about choosing the right references.

Derailing A Common Misconception. Often times applicants make the mistake in assuming that their future employer will not follow through in contacting his/her listed references. However, employers attempt to contact references more often than you would think. Therefore, it is good practice to assume that your references will be contacted.

Always Remember to Ask. Before listing someone as a potential reference, it is important to ask their permission. This helps weed out people who might not be 100% comfortable in speaking on your behalf. This is also a great opportunity to let them know what you have been up to, and what your future plans are professionally.

Coaching for Success It is also a good idea to coach your references. It is okay to tell a reference what type of position you are seeking and to let them know what qualities your future employer will be looking for. Make sure that your coaching is an accurate discription of your character, but is taylored to fit the needs of the position for which you are applying.

Choosing a Qualified Reference. Finally, it is important to choose references with appropriate qualifications. For instance, if you are applying for a Mechanical Engineering position, then listing a previous Pizza Hut boss might not be in your best interest. Therefore, it would be better to list a reference who has qualifications in a similar field.
