2 2 The Interviewing Process Provides the employer an opportunity to get to know the prospective employee and to evaluate his/her qualifications for the job Provides the prospective employee an opportunity to evaluate the job opportunity and to ask questions

3 3 Prior to the interview, the employer… Reviews all applications Eliminates applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications Sets up interview appointments with prospective employees

4 4 Employer Rules for Interviewing Be prepared. –Review the resume and/or application before the applicant arrives. –Make a list of open-ended questions to be asked. Be courteous. –Start on time. –Do not take calls. –Make the applicant feel comfortable and welcome.

5 5 Employer Rules for Interviewing (cont.) Give the applicant time to talk. –Observe applicant’s personality. –Observe oral communications and body language. –Guide the interview to confirm information on the resume and application. –Provide information about the company and job position.

6 6 Employer Rules for Interviewing (cont.) Take notes. Look for indications of potential problems. –Inadequate explanation of gaps in employment periods and/or frequent job changes –Negative comments about previous employers –Questionable reasons for desiring employment with this company

Remain pleasant and positive. –Keep an open mind and give the applicant the opportunity to complete the interview. –At conclusion, thank the applicant for coming in and let him/her know when to expect a decision. Check information and references. –Verify information supplied by the applicant. –Follow-up often reveals additional information and helps to better understand the applicant.

Administer tests. –Formal tests to measure analytical and organizational skills, personality traits, ethical/moral values, and/or sales aptitude –Physical tests Consider multiple or group interviewing techniques where appropriate. –Conduct more than one interview with the most promising applicants. –Team or group interviews for supervisory or managerial positions

9 9 Initial steps in hiring 1.Choose the best applicant for the job. 2.Contact the applicant and invite him/her to join the staff. 3.Once the applicant accepts, contact other applicants to thank them for applying and to inform them that the position has been filled. 4.Establish a date for the applicant to file the necessary paperwork and begin orientation/training.
