Ask the person to tell you as much as possible about it. Research the employer. If you have to send a resume make sure you know exactly who to send it to. If there’s not enough information in the ad don’t be afraid to call. Network See how well your qualifications match the job requirements (wish list).

8 References Help the employer make a final hiring decision. So select your references carefully. Possible references: teachers; principals; coaches; volunteer supervisors; previous employers Keep at least 3 references current: Make sure you get their permission. Telephone numbers are important.

9 Telephoning Plan your contact using the same skills you use for networking: Say hello, explain why you are calling and whom you would wish to speak with: I am calling about the sales position and I would like to speak with your manager. Be assertive when trying to contact the right person. Always remember to thank anyone who helps you.
