UNIT ASSESSMENT from the SQA ‘Explaining basic computer-aided design/draughting commands, techniques and practice’ 1.5Explaining basic computer-aided design/draughting commands, techniques and practice  The use of generic commands is recognised by the candidate as part of the process.  The candidate can explain their practice at various stages in the process. Evidence could be gathered by observation of the candidate and/or by asking or posing relevant questions in written or oral form. The assessor may wish to ask the candidate questions about the processes they are using and record responses. This may be best placed after computer-aided design and draughting learning activities. Advice on recording this kind of assessment is given later in this document. Alternatively, candidates could produce a step-by-step guide on how to model/draw a product, using screenshots. This may provide an opportunity to include a DTP guide on the creation of the model/drawing and the techniques and features used. 1

Step-by-Step Modelling This slideshow will take you through step-by-step how to model the Cafetiere – coffee pot – shown opposite. Drag the END OF PART icon up to hide each stage of the Modelling.

Revolve 1. Draw a ‘sketch’ profile 2. REVOLVE the sketch to create a cylinder. 3. Choose an appropriate (good) material 3

4 Shell 1. Use SHELL 2. Revolve the sketch to create a cylinder 3. Choose a good material

5 Loft 1. Draw a ‘sketch’ profile 2. Create more sketches for LOFTing the sketches into a curvy handle 3. Choose a good material for the handle

6 Revolve 1. Using the 3 sketches for the handle create the LOFT 2. Choose an appropriate (good) material

7 Extrude 1. Draw a ‘sketch’ profile for the spout 2. EXTRUDE the sketch to create the spout 3. Choose a good material

8 Extrude + ‘Cut’ 1. Draw a ‘sketch’ profile 2. EXTRUDE the sketch to create a cutaway in the spout

9 Fillet 1. FILLET the edges of the spout to make it pour better
