Studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Argentina Spent one year in the U.S. on a Guggenheim Fellowship, where he studied with Aaron Copland
He grouped his music into three periods- Objective Nationalism, Subjective Nationalism, & Neo-expressionism. Objective Nationalism incorporates Argentine folk themes in a straight forward manner, while the later periods integrate those elements in a more abstract form. Influenced by Copland, Stravinsky, and Bartok
Danza del viejo boyero op. 2 no. 1 (Dance of the old herdsman) Listen for bitonality. Right hand is played in C major while left hand is in D flat major. Danza de la moza donosa, op. 2 no. 2 (Dance of the beautiful maiden) Listen for slower tempo, 6/8 meter, integrates new theme with the them from the first no. Danza del gaucho matrero, op. 2 no. 3 (Dance of the arrogant cowboy) Listen for extreme dissonace, use of chromatic scale, accents on/off beats, glissando at the end of the piece.
