SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY Miss Syiem Chemistry

General Guidelines Conduct yourself in a responsible manner;

Read instructions before starting experiments Follow all instructions carefully

Goggles must be worn AT ALL TIMES when directed NO YES

Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor

Absolutely no horseplay in the lab!

What should you do before starting an experiment? READ instructions

When should you wear goggles? At ALL times during an experiment

Equipment

Keep work areas clean and tidy; Keep aisles clear

Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment Safety Shower

Fire extinguisher

Dispose of all chemical waste properly, according to instructions; Clean equipment and work area after use; Return all materials to proper location

Dress properly during a lab –Tie long hair back –No dangling jewelry –No loose, baggy clothing

No sandals (shoes should completely cover top of foot) Wear lab aprons

Never handle broken glass with your bare hands –Use a dust pan and brush –Place broken glass in glass disposal container

Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware; Never leave a lit burner unattended; When heating a substance in a test tube, never point the mouth of the test tube at yourself or others;

Never look down into a container that is being heated; Be careful – hot glass doesn’t look hot!

What type of shoes are appropriate during a lab? Close-toed ONLY

Do not eat food,drink beverages or chew gum in the lab

Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab

If a chemical splashes on your skin, immediately flush with running water and notify instructor

When checking a chemical for odors, gently waft vapors towards nose NO YES
