2 2 General Safety Rules 1. Listen to or read instructions carefully before attempting to do anything. Do not modify lab procedures unless told to do so by your instructor. 2. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from chemicals, heated materials, or things that might be able to shatter. 3. Notify your teacher if any spills or accidents occur.

3 3 General Safety Rules z4. Never pour chemicals back into stock bottles. z5. Only lab manuals and lab notebooks are permitted in the working areas. Other books, purses, and other items should be placed in your desk or storage area. z6. Nothing (chemical and/or equipment) may be taken from the laboratory without written permission.

4 4 General Safety Rules 7.After handling chemicals, always wash your hands with soap and water. 8. During lab work, keep your hands away from your face. 9. Tie back long hair.

5 5 General Safety Rules 10. Your apparel should be appropriate for laboratory work. 11. Appropriate footwear shall be worn at all times in the laboratory. 12. Keep your work area uncluttered. Take to the lab station only what is necessary.

6 6 General Safety Rules 13. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, fire blanket and eyewash station. 14. You should know the proper fire drill procedures and the location of the fire exits. 15. You should prepare for each lesson by reading all instructions before you come to class.

7 7 General Safety Rules 16. According to the Montville Safety you should wear glasses rather than contact lenses. 17. Never put anything into your mouth during a lab experiment. 18. Clean up your lab area at the conclusion of the laboratory period. 19. Never “horse around” or play practical jokes in the laboratory.

8 8 General Safety Rules z20. No food and/or beverages are permitted in any science laboratory or storage area. z21. Everyone should recognize and heed all safety symbols and cautions incorporated into procedures of the laboratory experiments.

9 9 Glassware Safety 1. Chipped or cracked glassware should not be used. Show it to the teacher. 2. Broken glassware should not be disposed of in a classroom trashcan. There is a special glass disposal container for it. 3. When pouring liquids into glassware, make sure the container you are pouring into is resting on a table at least a hands breadth from the edge.

10 10 Glassware Safety 4. If a piece of glassware gets broken, do not try to clean it up by yourself. Notify the teacher. 5. Do not place hot glassware in water. Rapid cooling may make it shatter.

11 11 Chemical Safety 1. Wear protective goggles whenever heating or pouring hazardous chemicals. 2. Never mix chemicals together unless you are told to do so (and then only in the manner specified). 3. Never taste any chemicals unless directed by the instructor (you should never taste anything in the lab).

12 12 Chemical Safety 4. If you need to smell the odor of a chemical, waft the fumes toward your nose with one hand. Do not put your nose over the container and inhale the fumes.

13 13 Chemical Safety 5. Follow the instructions of your teacher when disposing of all chemicals. Flammables should not be poured down the laboratory sink drain. 6. Wash your hands after handling hazardous chemicals.

14 14 Chemical Safety  7. Do not add water to acid. Remember AAA (like the battery size) – Always Add Acid to water. z8. Never chew gum, apply cosmetics (this includes ChapStick!) or put anything in your mouth (including your fingers and pencils/pens) in the laboratory.

15 15 Heating Safety 1. Use tongs, Hot Hands and/or protective gloves to handle hot objects. 2.Never reach across an open flame, hot plate or burner. 3. Always point the top ends of test tubes that are being heated away from people.

16 16 Heating Safety 4. Extreme caution should be exercised when using a burner or hot plate. Keep your head and clothing away from the burner/hot plate and turn off when not in use. Check to see that all hot plates are turned off before leaving the laboratory.

17 17 Heating Safety 5. Only glassware that is thoroughly dry should be heated. 6. Heat glassware by placing it on a wire gauze platform on a ringstand. Do not hold it in your hand.

18 18 First Aid Injury: Burns To Do: Immediately flush with cold water until burning sensation is lessened.

19 19 First Aid Injury: The eyes To Do: Flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for several minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in the eye, do not rub the eye.
