 40 million people are currently living with HIV infection an estimated 25 million have died from this disease Globally, 85% of HIV transmission is heterosexual

People living with HIV

1. H.I.V.= Human Immunodeficiency Virus 2. A.I.D.S.= Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome 3. Transmitted in 4 bodily fluids. 1. Blood 2. Semen 3. Vaginal fluid 4. Breast milk

How you can get HIV

You CANNOT Get HIV

Signs and Symtoms  Many people do not develop symptoms after they first get infected with HIV  Many experience headaches, fever and tiredness for the first few weeks but those symptoms go away. Even though the person has no symptoms, he/she is contagious and can pass HIV. Last for up to 10 years before it becomes AIDS

4.Abstinence is the only 100% effective way to avoid coming in contact with these bodily fluids. 5.A person is diagnosed with H.I.V. through a blood test (taken from the arm or finger), or a test where they take a swab of cells from the inside of the cheek.

6. H.I.V. attacks the T4 helper cells. These cells inform the immune system there are invaders inside the body. Also know as the white blood cells. 7. A person may live 7-10 years or longer with H.I.V. before being diagnosed with A.I.D.S.

8.A person becomes diagnosed with A.I.D.S. when their T4 helper cell count is 200 or below. 9. A.I.D.S. patients do NOT die from A.I.D.S. They die from opportunistic diseases. 10. Opportunistic diseases- the diseases that attack a person’s weakened immune system. 2 examples: Pneumonia Karposi Sarcoma (rare skin) cancer cancer

11. a) A pregnant woman who is H.I.V. positive has a 30% chance to transfer the disease to her child if she does not take any medication. b) A pregnant woman who is H.I.V. positive has a 8-9% chance to transfer the disease to her child if she takes medication during the 2 nd trimester. b) A pregnant woman who is H.I.V. positive has a 8-9% chance to transfer the disease to her child if she takes medication during the 2 nd trimester.

*To avoid H.I.V. abstain from risky behaviors that would put you in contact with bodily fluids containing the virus. 1.unprotected sex of any kind 2.sharing needles *Right now the #1 prevention is EDUCATION. Know your facts and protect yourself!!! Share this information with friends and loved ones. If you have put yourself at risk GET TESTED!!!!
