Wednesday: Poetry & Review Your midterm will be on: 1.Making inferences & drawing conclusions 2.Poetry 3.Parallel Structure 4.Dangling/misplaced modifiers 5.Essay writing What does it mean to infer? What does it mean to draw conclusion?

To make an inference is to take a critical look at what you are reading and make an assumption based on your own experiences.

When you draw a conclusion you use 2 things: What you know in your head. and What you ’ ve read in the story. A conclusion is the decision you come to when you put these two together.

Not Parallel Wrong: The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and to do some warm-up exercises before the game.

Parallel Parallel The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and that they should do some warm-up exercises before the game. — or — The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, not eat too much, and do some warm-up exercises before the game.

Wednesday: Poetry & Review Your midterm will be on: 1.Making inferences & drawing conclusions 2.Poetry 3.Parallel structure 4.Dangling/misplaced modifiers 5.Essay writing What are dangling modifiers? What are misplaced modifiers?

Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers Modifiers are words or word groups that describe other words in a sentence. In the following sentence, the words in bold modify woman. The woman who is sitting by the door is my sister.

Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers A misplaced modifier, because it is not correctly placed, describes the wrong word or words: INCORRECT Anne saw the neighbor’s dog drinking a Diet Coke. It sounds like the dog was drinking a diet coke! CORRECT Drinking a Diet Coke, Anne saw the neighbor’s dog.

A dangling modifier “dangles” because the word or words it is supposed to describe are not in the sentence. INCORRECT Jogging in the park, a dog bit me. The dog wasn’t jogging in the park; the actual jogger is missing from the sentence. CORRECT Jogging in the park, I was bitten by a dog. OR While I was jogging in the park, a dog bit me. Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers
