Surprise! Getting a job IS your job right now! Where do you begin?

How do you plan your new work day… getting a job? Get organized - Mentally and physically! 1.Resume draft ready? 2.Professional set up? 3.Professional voic set up? 4.Social Media sites ready? 5.Work space available? 6.Computer access? 7.Calendar handy? 8.Support group informed? 9.References contacted?? 10.TV off or other interferences gone? 11. Lunch prepared? Time to CLOCK IN!

Your Daily Agenda: What should it consist of? One or two hours a day doing the following: – Job hunting - surfing sites such as Career Builder, Monster, Indeed, Local Ads, Craigs List, etc. – Applying to jobs! – Registering with a temp agency. – Networking! Finding AND getting involved with a trade association. – LinkedIn Time – adding new contacts, setting up job alerts, following companies you are interested in, surfing jobs, updating new things to your profile. – Calling prospective companies, connections, etc. – Practicing your interview skills, role playing interviews with your support group. – Work to perfect your “30 second elevator pitch”. – Interviewing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – Dropping off your resume to a few places near your interview site. – Lunch – yes, take a break just like you do at work!

Consider Temporary Work Temporary work can be the stepping stones leading to many connections and even a full-time job! Not sure where to start? – Work with a staffing firm or recruiter to land temporary work, be flexible. – Often times they also invite you for free to networking events – ask to be a guest!

After Sending Your Resume: Always follow up: – By phone in one to two weeks – Keep it short and professional – Practice what you will say – Ask for an interview – Briefly recap your qualifications – Be politely persistent

Staying in Touch Existing contacts – Touch base once a week – Share useful leads or information – Connect on social networks New contacts – Follow up within 48 hours – Briefly recap your conversation – Share useful leads or information

The Interview: Practice makes perfect! Practice mock interviews: – Role play with your support group as much as possible. – Actually put on your interview suit when doing so. – Ask for constructive feedback and don’t be sensitive! Perfect your introduction or “elevator” pitch: – Practice at every networking event or chance you get. Be yourself, but be prepared! – Research the company’s website, find interesting facts to share. – Research anyone you are interviewing with and find facts in common to share. – If you are on time, you are late! If you are early, you are on time!

Interview Prep Work

Are you ready for your first day of work, “looking for a job”?

Example Calendar: Monday – – Surf and apply to jobs on Career Builder, learn more about AFWA, LinkedIn, Register with an agency, conduct Interview Role Plays and Practice Elevator Pitch to best friend Tuesday – – Surf and apply to jobs on Monster, make follow up calls on resume submitted yesterday, LinkedIn, practice hard interview questions, schedule phone screen interview Wednesday – – Set up alerts and apply to Indeed jobs, attending networking luncheon, Interview role play with favorite professor via Skype, drop off resume at a few companies in town. Thursday – – Look at local Ads and apply, follow up s, thank you cards and calls on resumes submitted, Interview and then drop off resume to 3 different companies by interview place and practice elevator pitch. Friday – – Attend networking event in morning, apply to jobs on Craig's List, do Volunteer work, update social media sites, skype Interview Saturday – – Check job alerts! Network all weekend wherever you go! Sunday – – Rest! But ABN – always be networking!

When You Don’t Get the Job Do not take it personally! Thank them for their time Ask to be considered for future positions Request feedback Follow up in a month or so!

Revisit Your Brand Trade reviews with a classmate – Request honest comments Ask a professor or internship manager for feedback – Graciously accept any comments – Thank them for their help Reassess every few months – Try to look at your materials with fresh eyes

When all else fails… You have to show up to your job…to get the job! Stick to your schedule every day! Be on time and work smart, not hard! Set goals with mini prizes! Stay positive! Keep the energy alive, people can sense it! Tap into your support groups! And…NEVER EVER, EVER, GIVE UP!
