Presentation transcript:

In February 1822, Helen became very sick and had an unknown sickness. Helen was thought to die from but survived with a few problems. She lost hear hearing and eyesight. She started to hate her life and had temper tantrums and screamed, they thought she was a “monster”.

It became really tough for the parent’s to deal with Helen, so they went searching for answers. They found an answer, she was blind and deaf indefinitely. However, she still had the possibility to succeed and be taught.

Anne Sullivan was a huge part of Helen’s life. In the beginning, Helen learned to finger spell. Later on she had a miracle and some of it is explained in this quote, "We walked down the path to the well-house, attracted by the fragrance of the honey-suckle with which it was covered. Someone was drawing water and my teacher placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten, a thrill of returning thought, and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me.”

After that miracle that happened Helen’s desire to learn grew. She learned so much from braille to typing.e4 She started to gain a lot of attention due to all of this. She met Alexander Graham Bell and President Cleveland.

She went to Cambridge School for Young Ladies. She then enrolled in Radcliffe College. She was the first deaf-blind person to further their education.

Helen Tours the World Helen went to many places giving lectures and some shows. She had her own movie about her life, “Deliverance” Anne’s health started to deteriorate, she couldn’t speak because of bronchitis.

HTW Continued. Polly Thomson, took over for Anne. Anne died due to being so weak to continue on. Polly and Helen went on working and then later Polly died. Helen worked on a book entitled, “Teacher.”

Ending... Helen suffered from her first stroke. She had to retire from the public life and settle down. She died peacefully and was cremated.

Accomplishments Before she died she wont the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award. She also had her life made into many movies, books, and even a broad way show. Many of these won numerous awards.

Helen’s Legacy Her resting place is a huge tourist attraction with a statue in braille saying, "Helen Keller and her beloved companion Anne Sullivan Macy are interred in the columbarium behind this chapel." She showed that have a disability was not always the end of the world, it was just another obstacle that someone has to overcome.
