Technical Board Summary Alan Bross MICE CM17 CERN February 25, 2007

TB Issues  Target issues u Upgraded power supply (100A capability) has been test s Up to 60A operation tested –TB CONCERN – HEATING&COOLING Mitigation – run at less than 1 Hz u Sheffield group is taking a Cautious approach u Control issue manifests in target not being caught on return  Proposed solution is to try a faster  P –THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN OF THE TB FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE TO TARGET SYSTEM CONVERGENCE ON HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PRESENTS REAL RISK TO THE SCHEDULE Mitigation – control electronics outside vault Mitigation – Test Sheffield u Requested a review s Documents in preparation s To be circulated to TB & reviewers s Review at Daresbury with Target team, DL EEs and outside experts –MUST REACH FIRM CONCLUSIONS AND DEVELOP A PLAN QUICKLY

Milestones ~ ~ not critical Beam line - Synchrotron Review controls & EE (9th March) Orange: prove mechanism at low amps ~3 mo Red: prove at high amps ~3 mo On probation? To be discussed TB Conclusion – At this point in time this Target Schedule is not quite credible

Hydrogen R&D system  Specification nearing completion u Final drawings almost complete u Almost ready for tender  Procedure proposed u TB review by & conclude by phone u Present documents to Tim Broome u Sign off for tendering

AFC  Absorber Focus Coil Module u Module Interface Issue – “O” rings, etc s Resolved in parallel session at this meeting –AFC flanges flat u Still a cryo-cooler issue with regard to the tender u Power supplies s Should be identical to those used in Tracker Solenoid and CC s LBNL to assume responsibility for procurement?

Schedule  Overall Beam Line Installation schedule is VERY Tight u Everything will be done to provide slack s “Parallelize” activities s Week ends s Double Shift? –Manpower issue  TOF & CKOV u Progress has been made u CKOV seems OK u TOF situation still has not yet fully stabilized  Spectrometer u Approximately 1 month delay from original baseline s Make up some of this time during fabrication is possible s Must make full detailed plan for mapping or risk additional delay

Operations During Running - Organization  Operational roles u Running period: s Physicist in charge –Time Frame? s Engineer in charge –Relatively long term commitment  Need to begin developing Operational procedures u Implies Working Group s Controlling entry to MICE hall s Instructions for entering with magnets on s Hydrogen operation restrictions
