MICE Preparations for CM18 Michael S. Zisman Center for Beam Physics Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory MICE Collaboration Video Conference April 12, 2007

February 25, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman2 Goals for CM18 (1) Beam line —component status (update) o status of PSI solenoid repair; fabrication of required components (magnets, stands) —optics design o complete for all needed emittance/momentum values; define tuning/correction schemes, including collimators and control algorithms; finalize diffuser params (size, thicknesses, mechanism) o resolve Turtle vs. G4BL discrepancy —tolerances (alignment, field strength, field quality) needed for all elements —magnetic measurements are needed for quads, bends —decide how many diffuser thicknesses are required o identify physicist to represent use and control of diffuser —investigate how well we can do BBA with triplet focusing —evaluate need for “pencil beam”

February 25, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman3 Goals for CM18 (2) Beam line (cont’d) —evaluate whether amount of material in beam line is too large to achieve low emittance values o modify optics at TOF0? Analysis —complete initial run plan (very important!) Software —prepare for MICE data o prepare plan for data analysis (must be expeditious!) o decide on database

February 25, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman4 Goals for CM18 (3) Detectors —how do we get calorimeter built? —understand backgrounds in MTA —VLPC cooling with Sumitomo cryocoolers marginal at 50 Hz LH 2 R&D and infrastructure —get the R&D under way! o aim for running full system by CM18 (June 2007) Target —need plans to implement what is needed for August o “good enough is best” –target dropping in beam may not be “good enough”

February 25, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman5 Goals for CM18 (4) Magnets —finalize and release AFC specification —need final plan for magnetic mapping with field sensors —review engineering design of CC RF —define method to measure voltage at 1% level (with beam) —define LLRF requirements Vacuum —plan to accommodate both O-ring and wire seals for modules

February 25, 2007Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman6 Goals for CM18 (5) Commissioning —define how we organize ourselves (EB to do this!) o MICE liaison (run coordinator) o shift leaders o shift members o subsystem experts o training –see http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/usertraining o procedures for dealing with (inevitable) problems –operations manual —need to explore visa and housing issues o contact is Susan Ketels (S.K.Ketels@rl.ac.uk)
