Windows Provide natural light, air circulation, and a view for the home and members living in the home Also serve as a point of emphasis in a room or as a part of the background For the exterior of a house, the window size, shape and placement can affect the appearance of the house.

Anatomy of a Window Write these definitions in your notebook that will be stored in your portfolio/binder. center/glossary/window- anatomy/default.aspx

Types of Windows: Sliding Double Hung Window o slides vertically o opens about one-half the size of the window Horizontal Sliding Window o Two sash window Have one sash that slides and the other stays fixed o Three sash window The center is fixed while the two outside sashes slide toward the center

Types of Windows: Swinging Casement Windows o Open and close with a crank and swing outward o Usually the entire window can open for air circulation Awning Windows o Swing outward at the bottom and are hinged at the top o Protects from the rain Hopper Windows o Hinged at the bottom to allow the top of the sash to swing inward Jalousie Windows o Series of horizontal, adjustable glass slats fastened into a metal frame o Open and close with a crank which have screens on the interior

Types of Windows Fixed o Do not open o Come in many shapes and sizes Combination o Bay window Combination of a large fixed window in the center and double hung windows on both sides Skylights & Clerestory o Skylights are located in the ceiling or roof o Clerestory windows are placed high on a wall

Doors Provide access, protection, safety, and privacy along with a barrier against sounds, extreme temperatures and light. Exterior doors are made from wood or wood covered with metal or vinyl. Interior doors are made from wood, metal, or wood covered with vinyl. Doors can be classified by their method of operation o Swinging o Sliding o Folding And they can be classified by their method of construction o Flush o Site and rail o Framed glass

Stile & Rail Doors These doors consist of stiles, rails, and panels o Stiles are solid vertical members o Rails are solid horizontal members o Panels are the space between stiles and rails The panels may be decorative or glass, raised or flat. o Raised panels are cut from solid wood o Flat panels are cut from plywood

Flush Doors Made by covering a framework core with wood or other material (metal or vinyl) Two types of solid cores o Solid which consists of tightly fitted blocks of wood covered with veneer. Sometimes particleboard is used as the core Typically heavy and used mainly for exterior doors o Hollow has a heavier outside frame combined with wood strips, stiff cardboard, or paper honeycomb as the core. Typically lightweight and used mainly as an interior door

Framed-Glass Doors Stile & rail doors with glass panels o Glass can be single pane or insulating glass Examples o French doors o Sliding Glass Doors Often take the place of windows in small or medium sized houses.
