Think about any work or volunteer experience you have had:  Did you have to communicate with customers or colleagues?  Did you work on a computer during your work or volunteer experience?  Did you have to write down instructions or other information during your work experience or volunteer experience? All of these things require good communication skills. Why communication is important

  Information is delivered or transmitted by the sender – the person who wishes to make the communication.   The person to who the information is transmitted to is called the “receiver.”   There must be a method of transmitting the information also referred to as a “medium” (plural media).   Some examples of media are voice, telephone, radio, television, newspapers, books, letters, and messengers.   Your voice was your medium when you asked your classmates to perform a simple task. Eeffective Communication

 Internal Conditions  Status or background of a person can affect communication  Similar backgrounds  Anger and Fatigue  External Conditions  Noise makers: TV, Music etc. Conditions Interfering with Communication

  Not just hearing the words and nodding your head but trying to understand the meaning intended by the sender   Having proper physical setting with few distractions as possible   Concentrating on what is being said rather than on how it is being said   Listening for ideas rather than facts   Paraphrase in your mind what is being said – be selective and listen for the main points Effective Listening

  Communications between business and its customer   Examples: telephone calls, letters, ads, catalogues, and on location customer service   Poor communications = lost sales and decreased profits External Communications
