Conjunction: joins words or groups of words

COORDINATING CONJUCTIONS Join words and group of words with equal or similar grammatical status FANBOYS FORANDNORBUTORYETSO

COORDINATING CONJUCTIONS CAN JOIN WORDS: John AND Mary were asking about you. (2 NOUNS) Gwen sings OR dances. (2 VERBS) The boring AND pointless meeting lasted forever. (2 ADJECTIVES) John ended the movie abruptly AND rudely (2 ADVERBS)

COORDINATING CONJUCTIONS CAN JOIN GROUPS OF WORDS: Melvin read the book AND saw the movie. The reporters took notes OR made recordings.

COORDINATING CONJUCTIONS CAN JOIN SENTENCES/INDEPENDENT CLAUSES: I called my neighbor, BUT she didn’t answer her phone. You asked me to change, SO I put on a different shirt. Either you change your attitude, OR you’re going to get fired.

COORELATIVE CONJUCTIONS Special type of conjunction that pairs up with other coordinating conjunctions John loves BOTH chocolate AND MMA. Mary loves EITHER kittens OR teenage drama. Alicia loves NEITHER monster trucks NOR Smarties. J.J. loves NOT ONLY new socks BUT ALSO watching Catfish.

SUBORDINATING CONJUCTIONS Join dependent clauses to a main/independent clause A subordinate/dependent clause "depends" on a main/independent clause. It cannot exist alone. Imagine that somebody says to you: "Hello! Although it was raining." What do you understand? Nothing! But a main or independent clause can exist alone. You will understand very well if somebody says to you: "Hello! Ram went swimming."

SUBORDINATING CONJUCTIONS after although as because before even if even though if in order that once provided that rather than since so that than that though unless until when whenever where whereas wherever whether while why

SUBORDINATING CONJUCTIONS Whenever lazy students whine, the teacher assigns more work. As the soda splashed onto the counter, my dad pulled his laptop out of the way. Because my dog loves pizza, she barks whenever the deliveryman drives by. Louisa will wash the dirty dishes once her roommate cleans the bathroom. We looked on top of the refrigerator where Jenny will often hide a bag of chocolate chip cookies. Ronnie sneezes constantly until the pollen count drops out of the danger zone.
