Comparison Diagram Source 1 (Kony)Source 2 (RND) Similarities Draw a venn diagram onto your poster. You need to identify and analyse 4/5 language features from each source – at least two of which should be similarities. Top Tip: You need to choose interesting language features that you are able to analyse

Class Feedback Source 1 (Kony) Source 2 (RND) Similarities

Model Answer The Kony online text uses strong and powerful adjectives to gets its message across about what an horrific person Joseph Kony is. For instance, “cruel”, “brutal” “world’s worst war criminal”. The effect on the reader will be to help us understand what a heartless and disgusting person he is and so help to shock the reader into joining the campaign to rid the world of terrible criminals like Kony. Similarly, the Red Nose Day online text uses emotive language in the form of adjectives to describe what life is like for people living in “urban slums” – however, here this language is used for a different purpose. It is used to tell us how difficult life is for many poor people in Africa. Their life is described as “desperate” and “tough”. The effect on the reader is that we feel sorry for these people and are therefore persuaded to get involved with Red Nose Day.

Structuring your Answer Introduction: Very short intro as to what each source is about (2 sentences). Paragraph 1: Contrast two different aspects from source 1 and 2 Paragraph 2: Contrast two different aspects from source 1 and 2 Paragraph 3: Compare two similar aspects from source 1 and 2 Paragraph 4: Compare two similar aspects from source 1 and 2 Use your writing frame to help structure your answer. You need to make sure you compare in every paragraph! This means using a comparative connective

Remember: Use the writing frame You need a short intro and 4 comparative paragraphs You need to use a comparative connective You still need good analysis of language features

Mini Review Let’s hear your best paragraph.

Self assess Now give yourself a mark out of mark for each piece of relevant and accurate evidence given from the text 1 mark for each detailed piece of language analysis

Improve this Paragraph In pairs try to improve the following paragraph and highlight the PEA and comparative connective used. The Red Nose Day page uses lots of personal pronouns. The effect is that it is persuasive and it makes the reader donate money because the article is speaking directly to them. The Kony webpage uses lots of questions to get the reader thinking about Kony and who he is.

Review 2 teams Answers the questions If you are correct place a nought or cross on the grid What could be the effect of lots of short sentences in a text? There are 4 bullet points in the success criteria. Name two of them. How long should you spend on question 4? Name 3 comparative connectives we could use if the texts are the same Name 3 comparative connectives we could use if the texts are different What part of the answer to question 4 gains you the most marks? What effect do personal pronouns have? What effect do lots of active verbs have on the reader? Name four language features.
