Presentation transcript:

 What do you think would be a good plan for reconstruction?  How are you going to get the North and the South to come together again?  Write down at least 3 “lines” to answer these questions. You may work with the person next to you to come up with this plan.

 The North returned to relative normalcy  The South faced very different situation… Land, buildings, cities, homes, RR’s were destroyed Freedmen- former slaves were now set free  13 th Amendment- ended slavery

 Lincoln had been preparing for this Re-Union of the United States.  His plan was known as Reconstruction The rebuilding of former Confederate States and reuniting the nation.

 Lincoln’s Plan- 10% Plan 10% of Voters had to swear loyalty to the Union Abolish Slavery Confederates could vote and hold office

 What was Lincoln’s plan for Reconstruction?  What was the 13 th Amendment?

 Congress’s Plan- Wade-Davis Bill Majority of state population had to swear loyalty to the Union Abolish slavery Confederates could not vote or hold office

 Both Congress and Lincoln agreed on this  Freedmen’s Bureau Helped former slaves find jobs, provided them food and clothing, helped set up schools  Helped poor whites find work as well

 What was congress’ plan for Reconstruction?  How was it different from Lincoln’s plan?

 Post Civil War left mass devastation in the South.  Shattered Southern economy.  Millions of newly emancipated slaves jobless and homeless.

 Write 1 paragraph explaining which Reconstruction plan you think is better Lincoln’s 10% Plan or Wade Davis Bill  Include 2 supporting facts (from the plan) to form your opinion. Underline your 2 supporting facts!

1. The class will be broken up into 2 groups. 2. You will be designated “Old South” or “New South”. 3. With your groups, brainstorm what life would have been like in your group after the Civil War.

 -Majority of white men must swear loyalty to the Union before being admitted.  -Must ratify the 13 th Amendment- abolish slavery  -Former Confederate officials may vote and hold office.

 -Radical Republican Plan- didn’t think any plans were harsh enough. Must disband state governments Must write new constitutions Must ratify the 14 th Amendment African American men must be able to vote.
