Ofsted Report. Nov ‘For more academically able pupils, inspection evidence shows that teaching & learning can be insufficiently challenging and poorly matched to their needs. This is a weakness even in some schools otherwise judged to be good.’ Implications for our practice;- Reflect on your current practice. Stretch and challenge your talented & gifted!

The characteristics of high levels of ability in students. Scope of general knowledge. Conceptual understanding & application. Curiousity. Perceptiveness. Well developed thinking skills. High levels of geographical literacy & numeracy. Attitude towards informal learning experiences. Interaction with peers Teacher perceptions;- arrogant, impatient, lazy, opinionated, perfectionist, underachieving, rude.

Raising challenge in the geography classroom. Demand greater independence. Increase pace. Facilitate regular self review. Use high order questions. Use a wide range of resources. Use more advanced texts. Demand greater precision in terms of geography language. Introduce enquiry led open ended learning activities to encourage interest. Increase emphasis on creativity, problem solving. Decision making, evaluation and analysis.

Questioning for Talented & Gifted. Can you dispute this? Consider statements that are usually accepted and try to dispute them E.g. We must save endangered species. What if ? You were lost in the Desert. How many ways can you? Reduce your Carbon Footprint.

More Questions for Talented & Gifted. Whats wrong with it? Give the disadvantages of and improvements to E.g. Intensive Farming. How come? Give possible explanations of E.g. People standing next to collapsed buildings. Whats the Question? Suggest 5 questions to the answer E.g. Shanty towns.
