3 © Crown copyright 2003 Key Stage 3 National StrategySlide 9.2 Benefits of lesson planning for teaching and learning Good lesson plans can benefit teaching and learning by: ensuring that the lesson has a clear structure (beginning, middle, end) shifting the emphasis of lessons away from what pupils do to what they learn and how they learn defining precise learning objectives for pupils in terms of: – knowledge (to know that…) – skills (to be able to…) – understanding (to understand how/why…) – attitudes and values (to be aware of…) identifying Framework objectives to be addressed in the lesson ensuring that the teaching sequence addresses the learning objectives

4 © Crown copyright 2003 Key Stage 3 National StrategySlide 9.3 Benefits of lesson planning for teaching and learning Good lesson plans can benefit teaching and learning by: ensuring that lessons build on previous learning helping teachers to work at an appropriate pace throughout the lesson ensuring that discerning use is made of the textbook making explicit any teaching strategies (e.g. modelling, questioning) that will play an important part in the lesson ensuring that homework is planned providing a focus for the teacher to reflect on the lesson, evaluate its effectiveness and identify areas for improvement

6 © Crown copyright 2003 Key Stage 3 National StrategySlide 9.5 Building on the basic lesson plan Lesson plans could also: highlight key features of strong, purposeful teaching – for example explain, demonstrate, model, scaffold – that need to be expertly used in the lesson to ensure that the objectives are met identify evidence needed to demonstrate that pupils have achieved the objectives include brief notes relating to the needs of individuals (e.g. special educational needs, gifted and talented) and how any additional support might be used identify relevant resources note cross-curricular links with literacy and ICT refer to the ‘big picture’ by saying why this lesson is important within the unit
