Welcome Overview of Meeting Nature of Science (NOS) Activity Common Planning for STEM Thursday Q&A

Mystery of the Closed Container

ENGAGE Think-Pair-Share Think about the words observation and inference. Talk to your neighbor about what we do when we make an observation versus an inference. Pairs will share with the group their description of what it means to make an observation versus inference.

EXPLORE Part I. As a team: Exploring the OB-SCERTAINER. 1.You will be given a container, which you will leave on the table and only use your sense of sight to begin making observations. 2.Record your observations on a chart. 3.Next, further explore the container utilizing your other senses. RULE: The container needs to stay closed! 4.Record your observations.

EXPLORE Part II. As a team: 1.What inferences can you make about the container? 2.Record your observations on a chart. 3.What questions do you have about the container? 4.Record your questions.

EXPLORE Part III. PROBLEM: What is the configuration or design inside of the closed container known as the OB-SCERTAINER? KNOWN DATA: The closed OB-SCERTAINERS have a steel ball inside that moves within the partitions and walls. You are unable to see or touch the inside of the OB-SCERTAINER.

EXPLAIN Share your answers with the class. Explain your reasoning.

ELABORATE 1.From the sound and path of the steel ball, determine the shape and location of the partition or partitions. 2.Record the OB-SCERTAINER number on the handout provided and draw/illustrate your hypothesis in the first circle. 3.Test this hypothesis by moving the ball along the partitions according to your hypothesis.

ELABORATE 4. Compare your hypothesis with another group with your same OB-SCERTAINER number. 5.If you wish to make changes to your hypothesis or create a new one, do so in the second circle. This will reflect your final hypothesis. 5.Draw a picture of what you think the inside of your OB-SCERTAINER. 6.As you complete this, you are creating a model to explain the phenomenon you are observing.

Guiding Questions In what ways did other classmates affect the way you investigated your container and the conclusions you reached? What does this imply about the value of collaboration when doing science?

Guiding Questions Considering that many of you approached the problem (of hypothesizing how the inside of the container is constructed) in different ways, what might we conclude about the existence of one scientific method?

Guiding Questions In what way did you have to make meaning of the data you collected? How is this different than data telling you what to think?

EVALUATE You were not allowed to open the OB-SCERTAINER or know for sure the configuration or design inside the container… 1.How is this like a scientist who is investigating the natural world? 2.How is it different?

Tenets of NOS 1.Empirical 2.Tentative 3.Inferential 4.Nature of Scientific Theories 5.Nature of Scientific Laws 6.Creative and Imaginative 7.Theory-laden 8.Social, Cultural, and Political Influences 9.Scientific Models

EVALUATE What nature of science (NOS) tenets did this activity involve?

Purpose of the Activity To determine the configuration or design inside the closed container known as the OB-SCERTAINER!

Lesson Objectives Distinguish between observations and inferences or interpretations Illustrate how data can be obtained by making non- visual observations Explain that scientists pose questions, test and revise hypotheses based on evidence Recognize that science is uncertain because it is a human activity Understand that science does not prove or conclude – it is always a work in progress Demonstrate that science is a collaborative enterprise and that scientific uncertainty can be reduced through collaboration.
