Marvelous Magnets! Determine that only certain types of objects are attracted to magnets. 3 rd Grade Science

What is a magnet? A magnet is an object that can push or pick up materials. This push or pull is an invisible force called magnetism.

Santa doesn't live at this North Pole Every magnet has two ends where it is strongest. These are called the North Pole and South Pole. North Pole South Pole

What makes it do that?! Objects that are attracted by magnets have similar properties (made of the same materials). A magnet is made of these same materials.

Push! Pull! If you put the poles of two magnets together, they will either pull together or push apart. They will pull (attract) each other if the poles are different. They will push (repel) each other if the poles are the same.

Sticky situation In order for a magnet to pull toward another item the objects must be made of iron, steel, or nickel. What kinds of objects can you find at home that are made of iron, steel, or nickel?

It’s only a paper clip!! A paper clip is made of steel. This is why a magnet will attract to a paper clip! Can you think of other objects that a magnet will stick to?
