St John’s Junior School Planning Workshop May 2011 Understanding Learning Objectives and Success Criteria

Why Are We Here? Choose 1 scribe per table group Write a separate idea on each piece of paper. Value all ideas (Do not Discuss) Get as many ideas as you can related to the question: Why should children come to school between the 1 st and 5 th basico?

Why are we here? Lay all your ideas out in front of you. Arrange them in a diamond 9 – with the most important reason at the top. Most Important Less Important

Looking Towards the PYP

Interconnected the written curriculum —what do we want to learn? the taught curriculum —how best will we learn? the assessed curriculum —how will we know what we have learned?

So… What do we want to learn?

Change the conversation in class… What are we doing at school today? Today we are learning to … LEARNING

A learning objective isA learning objective encompasses A learning objective is expressed A learning objective is NOT expressed A precise statement of what a child should be able to do at the end of an activity A differentiated minimum target An application or A capability or An opportunity for pupil assessment/self evaluation draw handle Identify list calculate present plan build predict make decide define apply use state contrast compare select assemble explain describe discuss construct write solve classify reflect upon make distinctions draw conclusions Demonstrate Know Understand Learn Memorise Acquire skills in Become familiar with Develop mastery in Appreciate the significance of Understanding is a very important learning objective BUT it is measured by one or more of the above objectives. If you use it as an objective in its own right, you MUST say how it will be assessed by application in problem solving WRITING LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Sorting out the learning from the activity / context To make notes from a talk about the history of saint johns school To draw a portrait of an ex rector from st johns To find out about how uniform at st johns has changed over the years. To look at photos of the school buildings at different times To know about the main events in the history of the school

Success Criteria: What does a good one look like?

What Makes it ‘GOOD’?

What are we looking for from pupil’s work? Success criteria should be specific to the objective. They can be developed with the pupils, but teachers should have a clear idea of what they are beforehand.

What could the success criteria be for... To listen actively in class ??????????????

What would the ‘success criteria’ be for... To write a simple sentence... To identify lines of symmetry in 2 dimensional shapes... To find information from the internet... To write a setting description...

What Next? Choose the key objectives for the next unit of work Break it into clear, attainable learning objectives Consider the success criteria for each objective Share the learning journey with the pupils Make it: relevant, interesting and attainable for all pupils
