Key calculation strategies: Number lines

Keep the biggest number whole and partition the other number. First add on the tens and then the units. +20 +3 +5 +20 +3 +5 37 57 60 65 37 + 28 = Addition

Put the biggest number on the right hand side of the number line. Partition the second number. First subtract the tens and then the units. 105-12 = Subtraction

Draw 3 jumps of 4. 3 x 4 = Multiplication

Count in groups of 4 until you reach 24. Count how many jumps to find the answer. 24 ÷ 4 = Division

Later in the year, those children who are ready will progress to using column methods for addition and subtraction as an alternative strategy.
