2 What is Colonialism? The extension of a nation's rule over another territory for political or economic reasons. By 1800, European colonies were found in every continent except Antarctica. Are there countries colonizing today?

3 Due to navigational innovations, Western Europe was able to explore & colonize new lands.

4 Why did the Europeans colonize the world? 1. Get resources to fuel the Industrial Revolution and establish markets for those products.

5 Why did the Europeans colonize the world? 2. Spread their faith.

6 Why did the Europeans colonize the world? 3. Settle on newly found good land (U.S.).

10 Cultural Influences:

11 British Colonization: Fill in top bubble on organizer Colonization helped to shape the modern world, as Europe changed cultures around the world. Much of what the British brought to other regions are still evident today.

12 Government and Schools (First rectangle) The English government set up governments and schools throughout their empire. (India, Australia, Canada) Corresponding oval - The result was a diffusion of not only governmental practices (Democracy) but also a systematic approach to education. This is also where many of those colonized learned the English language.

13 Culture and Entertainment (Second rectangle) When the British colonized an area they often brought their culture with them. Corresponding oval - This included their way of dress, language,religion, entertainment and sports, and other elements of their culture. Rugby, Soccer, and cricket are all sports that gained popularity where the British colonized.

14 Transportation and Infrastructure (Third rectangle) The Industrial Revolution led to an improved transportation system (roads, canals, subways, and railroads….) Corresponding oval –The early1800’s-Britain had the world’s 1st railroad system –1853-The British build and open the first Asian railway in India –1860 the world’s first subway, called “The Tube,” opened in London.

15 (Fourth rectangle )European colonialism had negative effects on culture as well. Corresponding oval- Many Africans were enslaved and sold through the Atlantic Slave Trade Colonies were exploited for resources and forced to buy from Europeans. Disease killed many native people.

16 Other European countries diffused their culture through colonization. The province of Quebec in Canada still retains its French heritage. Latin America was influenced by Spain through its language and religion.

17 Processing Activity: Facebook Assignment: Using your notes and other resources provided by your teacher create a ‘Facebook’ page for Colonialism. –Step 1: Fill out the information section– 140 character limit for– Explain what colonialism is and describe at least 3 objectives/goals of colonialism. –Step 2: Create a web-site domain name in the section where it asks for a “web-site” that could represent colonialism (example: www.weowntheworld.net) –Step 3: Fill out the “likes and interests” On the “likes” section list three of the contributions of British society in the world. On the “interests” section, write down one fact about colonization. –Step 4: Under the sponsored story icon on the right side of the paper, draw and illustrate an ad for one mode of transportation developed by the British. –Step 5: Under the sponsored icon, explain the negative side of colonization. –Step 6: For the Friends section, draw and color the flags of 4 other colonizing countries (for example-- Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Netherlands….)
