Chapter 1 The Human Body: An Orientation

Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity Serous Membrane or Serosa – Double layered membrane that covers the walls of the ventral body cavity and outer surface of the organs – Parietal serosa and visceral serosa

Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity Parietal serosa – The outer layer of the serous membrane that lines the cavity walls

Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity Visceral Serosa – The inner layer of the serosa that covers the organs of the ventral body cavity

Membranes in the Ventral Body Cavity Serous fluid – Separates the serous membrane – Thin layer of lubricating fluid

Regions Umbilical Region – Centermost region – Surrounding the navel

Regions Epigastric Region – Superior to the umbilical region – Epi = upon, above – Gastri = belly

Regions Hypogastric (pubic) Region – Located below the umbilical region – Hypo = below

Regions Right and Left Iliac (Inguinal) Regions – Located lateral to the hypogastric region – Iliac = superior part of the hip bone

Regions Right and Left Hypochondriac Region – Flank the epigastric region laterally – Chondro = cartilage
