The Bear Flag Revolt

The Bear Flag Revolt is a significant event because on page 352, it is said that California, led by William B. Ide, was proclaimed as it's own country at a time. The republic was short-lived because soon after the Bear Flag was raised, the U.S. military began occupying California, which went on to join the union in 1850. The Bear Flag became the official state flag in 1911.This event is much more significant than the creation of the American party, creation of the Republican party, and the decli

Having won a bloodless victory at Sonoma, Ide and Merritt then proceeded to declare California an independent republic. With a cotton sheet and some red paint, they constructed a makeshift flag with a crude drawing of a grizzly bear, a lone red star (a reference to the earlier Lone Star Republic of Texas) and the words “California Republic” at the bottom. From then on, the independence movement was known as the Bear Flag Revolt. The United States had declared war against Mexico on May 13, 1846. T

Three weeks after it had been proclaimed, the California Republic quietly faded away. This greatly out weighs the creation of the Republican party that had to rely on the support of others to get a start. In early 1854, the first proto- Republican Party meeting took place in Ripon, Wisconsin. On June 6, 1854 on the outskirts of Jackson, Michigan upwards of 10,000 people turned out for a mass meeting "Under the Oaks." This led to the first organizing convention in Pittsburgh on February 22, 1856.

The gavel fell to open the Party's first nominating convention, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 17, 1856, announcing the birth of the Republican Party as a unified political force. It's members dedicated themselves to stopping slave power. They declared slavery a great evil and vowed to fight against its extension into new territories. They also demanded the repeal of the Kansas- Nebraska act and the fugitive slave act. Farmers, professionals, small buisness owners, and craftworkers made

The bear flag revolt settled its issues and accomplished its goals in a much more efficent way than the republican party did. It also made its accomplishment with its own power. The Bear Flag Revolt also outshines the decline of the Whig party because unlike its mostly forgotten counterpart, this revolt is still shown as a proud part of history in California because the bear flag is still proudly flown today as the state flag. this is also why it is more significant from the long since deterior

The slavery issue had badly hurt the whigs. Many northern Whigs had been Protestants who became disgusted by the Whig leaders to compromise on slavery. The leaders of the Bear Flag Revolt never compromised unlike the Whigs. Even its merge into the Union was originally its goal.

In 1854, nativists went public by forming a political organization, the American Party. It pledge to work against Irish Catholic candidates and to campaign for laws requiring immagramts to wait longer before they became citizens. Because it was closely associated with the Order of the Star- Spangled Banner, the American Party was also called the know-nothings. Their main supporters were working men fearful of losing jobs to irish and german immagrants. It appears that political parties seemed to

The Bear Flag revolt is much more significant if only for the mere fact that they were fighting to uphold their freedom and independence. What America is know for today. Unlike the the American barty who believed themselves to be natives, the whigs party whose resolved weakened and gave in to slavery, and the republican party who drew their support almost entirely from antislavery democrats, whigs, and free soldiers in the North. All information came from Chapter 3 pages 352 and 359-361
