Sugar and Quartering Acts

Question of the Day Today you are trying to discover the answer to the question: “What were the Sugar and Quartering Acts and why were the colonists so angry about them?”

Getting ready… On page 58 of your Comp Book, put SUGAR ACT. On page 59 put Quartering Act. Put it in the Table of Contents, too.

Quartering Act Go watch the first Quartering Act video.

Quartering Act Go watch the second Quartering Act video.

Questions you can answer from the videos. What did the Colonists have to give to British soldiers? Who created the Quartering Act? What did the Quartering Act say? How did the Quartering Act lead to the American revolution?

http://www.u-s- history.com/pages/h641.html Go to this link. Paste it in your browser window, read through it and answer this question:http://www.u-s- history.com/pages/h641.html In your own words, what are two reasons the colonists did not like the Quartering Act?

Sugar Act Watch the first video for the Sugar Act.

Sugar Act Answer these questions from the video. You may watch it again if you need to. King George could not make the law. Laws were passed by ___________. Who did the Sugar Act hurt more- rich or poor people? Why?

Sugar Act Notes Add these to your comp book Sugar and molasses had a tax of 6 pence (similar to a penny) per gallon. People did not like paying the tax, so smugglers were able to make a lot of money. Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence, was a smuggler.

Sugar Act First, the tax was lowered from 6 pence to 3 pence to make it easier to pay. Second, Lord Grenville put more Navy ships in America to stop smugglers and force the tax to be paid.

Sugar Act Because of this, sales on molasses slowed down. Less rum, made from molasses, was made.

Sugar Act The colonies had less money to spend because they were selling less rum, and they paid more in taxes. Also, people had less money, so they saved more and spent less. This caused other people to make less money, too.

Answer these questions: Critical thinking: What are two ways the Sugar Act would hurt someone who made chairs? Besides having to pay more for sugar, what else about the Sugar Act would make colonists angry? Try to think of at least 2. Where else in your Comp Book do you need to put information about the Sugar Act?

Now type a letter to the Parliament, complaining about one or both of the Acts. Tell them what you do not like about it. Tell them at least 2 ways it affects your family or business. Tell them what you want them to do about it. Tell them what you think will happen if they don’t do that. Save it and print off a copy for Mr. Marsh.
