ROAD TO REVOLUTIONARY WAR

 Great Britain’s in debt because of the French and Indian War  Need to make money by raising taxes  Colonists need to pay because it was their war  Britain also passes laws to help protect the colonists but the colonists aren’t happy  Proclamation of 1763  Colonists can’t settle West of the Appalachian Mountains  Quartering Act  Colonists must provide housing and basic needs of British soldiers IT BEGINS WITH…

 The Stamp Act  Taxed all printed materials – had to purchase the stamp to show you had paid your tax  Colonists will form the Sons of Liberty and boycott the Stamp Tax  Britain Repeals (gets rid of the tax)  “ No Taxation Without Representation”  Colonists said they can’t be taxed unless they have a person in Parliament representing them (saying yes or no) NOW TO MAKE SOME MONEY

 Colonists will take action because they think it is unfair since they have governed themselves for so long the King should just stay away  Townshend Act  Puts a tax on imported goods (goods coming into colonies) such as glass, tea, lead, and paper  Colonists boycotted British goods

 Boston Massacre  Britain sent more troops to help protect colonists and keep colonists from rebelling against the taxes  Colonists and Soldiers will begin to argue in Boston  Shots are fired and the British soldiers killed 5 people in Boston  Tea Act  Put a tax on all tea except for tea from British Tea Company  Made the British tea cheap – hurts colonial business  Boston Tea Party  Colonists protest the Tea Act by dressing up as Native Americans and throwing the tea overboard into Boston Harbor MORE TROUBLE

 Intolerable Acts  Britain takes action after the Boston Tea Party  Colonists need to pay for the tea  Boston Harbor is closed down  Boston under military control and can’t have their own government  First Continental Congress  Delegates from the colonies get together to discuss the ongoing problems with the king  Write a letter with complaints and demands and the King ignores it AND AGAIN

 Plan to have a Second Continental Congress to discuss what next but…  Lexington and Concord  First battle of the Revolutionary War occurs as colonists are marching to get the weapons they have been stocking up and run into British soldiers who are going to take away those weapons  Second Continental Congress Takes Place  Decide they must go to war  Write Declaration of Independence NOW WHAT?
