How can you tell? Why do you think the man is standing in front of the tank? What do you think is going to happen to the man if he continues to stand in front of the tank?

5 On June 4, 1989, Chinese students gathered in Tiananmen Square to protest the authoritarian government in China and demand democracy.

6 FILM FOCUS: What is the government doing to stifle the protesters?

7 Become a passage master! As I read, underline the part you find the most interesting.

8 FILM FOCUS: Why do you think that these university students had never heard of the Tiananmen Square Massacre? Could this have happened in the United States?

9 Tinker v. Des Moines Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District

10 Tinker v. Des Moines Narrator: It was a dark and stormy night. Just kidding. It was a regular day in 1968 and John and Mary Tinker were getting ready for school. They each put on a black armband on their way out the door because they wanted to protest the Vietnam War. John Tinker: Bye, Mom! Mary Tinker: Bye, Mom! Narrator: Little did they know that they were going to be in big trouble when they got to school.

11 Tinker v. Des Moines Principal: Good morning, John and Mary. I am sorry, but you are going to have to take those armbands off. They are not allowed at school. John Tinker: But they’re not hurting anyone! Mary Tinker: And we’re allowed to voice our opinions about things anyway! That’s our first amendment right! Narrator: The fight didn’t end there. They were able to take their case all the way to the Supreme Court, and eventually, the Supreme Court ruled in the Tinkers’ favor. They said that as long as it wasn’t a distraction, free speech could be allowed at school.
