1 Compare the demographic indicators for Africa South of the Sahara (pg 232) with those of North America (pg #89) and Europe (pg #334). Write down at least 2 good observations.

2  Students will be able to compare demographic information from several different regions.  Students will be able to understand the population issues that confront Sub Saharan Africa.  Students will relate population trends to settlement patterns of Sub Saharan Africa.

3  Population and Settlement: Young and Restless on pages #231 to #233.  Summarize this passage by writing 3 to 5 sentences.

4  Population density is the number of people per unit of land.  Physiological density is the number of people per unit of arable land.  Agricultural density is the number of farmers per unit of arable land.

7  Sub Saharan Africa is the least urbanized part of the world.  However, Sub Saharan Africa is becoming more urbanized every year!!

11  “Family Size” from page #233 in the textbook.  What factors contribute to high birth rates in many parts of Sub Saharan Africa?  How did / do many African governments now look at family size?  How do many people in the western world look at family size in this region?

12  Safety Net - Africans look at children as economically advantageous.  Playing the odds - High Infant mortality rates.  Cultural – I am a MAN!  Religious – Many Africans will not use contraception because of their religious / cultural beliefs.

13  What potential problems could arise from continued population growth in this region of the world?  How serious do you think this problem could become?

14  Population in Sub Saharan Africa is growing at a rapid pace.  A large percentage of the population is under the age of 15.  Nations with very young populations tend to be less stable than “older” nations. WHY?
