3 Source: Whose message is it and who is controlling the content of the advertisement? Target Audience: Who are are they trying to reach? Think about age, gender, class, interests etc... Subtext: The interpretation each of us makes of the message based on previous experiences, knowledge, opinions, attitudes and values.

4 Persuasion Techniques: What techniques have been used to try to persuade us to believe or do something? Point of View: No one tells the whole story. Everyone tells part of the story depending on their point of view.

5 PROPAGANDA TECHNIQUES- WAYS OF CONVINCING OTHERS! Bandwagon This technique tries to persuade everyone to join in and do the same thing. Testimonial An important person or famous figure endorses a product. It changed my life! The Best!

6 Transfer Good feelings, looks, or ideas transferred to the person for whom the product is intended. Repetition The product name or keyword or phrase is repeated several times.

7 Emotional Words Words such as luxury, beautiful, paradise, and economical are used to evoke positive feelings in the viewer. Name-calling Negative words are used to create an unfavorable opinion of the competition in the viewer's mind. That is a STUPID book! You should have bought the other one!

8 Compare and Contrast The viewer is led to believe one product is better than another, although no real proof is offered Faulty Cause and Effect Use of a product is credited for creating a positive result. Best

9 1. Whose message is this? Who created or paid for it? Why? 2. Who is the “target audience”? What is their age, ethnicity, class, profession, interests, etc.? What words, images or sounds suggest this? 3. What is the “text” of the message? (What we actually see and/or hear: written or spoken words, photos, drawings, logos, design, music, sounds, etc.)‏ 4. What is the “subtext” of the message? (What do you think is the hidden or unstated meaning?)‏ 5. What kind of lifestyle is presented? Is it glamorized? How? 6. What values are expressed? 7.
