O bjective: I can use a double entry journal to enhance my understanding of text. Wa rm Up (in your composition book) C opy today's date and the objective into your comp book. Go to the next clean sheet in your comp book, and make three columns (for vocabulary) and label the columns ROOT, WORD, DEFINITION

3 Today we will be reading a short story called The Fun They Had. We will then respond to this text using a double entry journal.

4 Double entry journal A double entry journal is a way for you to interact with the text by selecting important passages and responding to them in one of several different ways.

7 Double entry journal For the different responses, remember this mnemonic... Every Pirate Claims Really Quality Coins.

8 Evaluate - make a judgment about what the author is trying to say

9 Predict - anticipate what will occur based on what's in the passage

10 Clarify - answer earlier questions or confirm / disaffirm earlier predictions

11 Reflect - thin k deeply about what the passage means in the broad sense. What does it tell you about the world, how things work.

12 Question - ask about something in the passage that is unclear and offer your perpective on it

13 Connect - make a connection to the world, your life or another text

14 Now turn in your Springboard book to pg. 318 - The Fun They Had.
