November 18, Problem-solution The Problem with Bullies Homework: Review your notes Informational text test on Monday, November 24th!!! Objective I can evaluate an author's use of problem-solution pattern of organization in an informational text. Warm Up: Make sure your name is on your spatial order paragraphs homework, that your paragraphs are labeled (NEAR to FAR, etc.) and turn it in on the blue high stool. Look up the definition for PROBLEM-SOLUTION in the blue section of your Literature book and copy it into your notes.

6 strategies for reading
Problem-solution: strategies for reading look for an explanation of the problem in the first or second paragraph look for words such as problem and reason to find the solution, ask: What suggestion does the writer offer to the problem? look for words such as propose, conclude and answer that may signal a solution

7 Problem-solution order:
practice and apply 1. According to the model, what is the cause of the problem? 2. What solution does the writer offer? What words are the clue?

8 Turn to pg. 186 in your Interactive Reader. The Problem with Bullies

9 A TAKE NOTES Reread lines What do you learn about the roots of bullying in these lines?

10 B TAKE NOTES Reread lines In your organizer, take notes on the statistics the author provides on bullying that you find especially important.

11 C TAKE NOTES Reread the subheading. What kinds of information do you think this section will contain? In which part of your graphic organizer would you write notes from this section?

12 D TAKE NOTES Reread lines In your organizer, take notes on the effects of bullying.

13 PAUSE AND REFLECT What measures does the author suggest to stop bullying? How effective do you think they will be?
