3 Separation of Powers Breaks government responsibilities into three specific branches. Each branch has its own role to play. Checks and Balances – Makes sure that one branch does not have more power over the other two! Why?

4 Legislative Branch Has power to make laws. Is made up of Congress ▫Congress is the Senate (100) and the House of Representatives (435).

5 Executive Branch Carries out the Laws. Made up of … ▫The President  Can Veto Bills passed by Congress! ▫The Vice-President ▫The Cabinet  Nominated by the president and must be approved by 51 Senators.

6 Judicial Branch The Supreme Court ▫9 Justices. Appointed by the President and serve life terms. ▫Decides whether or not laws are constitutional.
