Three Foreign Policy Choices 1) Neutrality - To not take sides. 2) Isolationism - To cut off al foreign relations. To not be involved at all 3) Interventionism - To get involved in world affairs. We got the money figured out, what about all these other countries?

1789 to 1815 – French Revolution and European wars put a lot of pressure on U.S. to take a side! Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams

Relations with England = getting worse o England wouldn't leave NW Territories (Treaty of Paris) o England also grabbed Americans off American ships to serve in navy against France! (impressment)

Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams America passed anti- British navigation laws = harder to trade It was clear this would greatly damage the U.S. economy! Could we fight the British?? NO!!

Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams We had to deal. Jay’s Treaty John Jay, a U.S. diplomat, was sent to England to work this out.

Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams Jay’s Treaty Terms: England leaves NW Territories (again) England pays some damages for U.S. ships sunk (neutral)

Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams U.S. gives most favorite nation status to England (trade advantage) U.S. will not seek damages for “impressment”

Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams VERY unpopular! People burned John Jay in “ effigy” Ratified, by Congress with Washington’s support.

Foreign Policy of Washington and Adams Washington: Proclamation of Neutrality in 1793 and Farewell Address in 1796 Set the tone for American foreign policy until WW I STAY OUT OF EUROPE!!!
