3. Magna Carta 1215- nobles force king to respect their rights. Middle of a field called Runnymede near London Made King John approve a document they had written Magna Carta- document listing rights that the king could not ignore. Latin “Great Charter”

4. Effects of Magna Carta Required king to honor certain rights. Habeas Corpus “you have the body” Meant that people could not be kept in jail without a reason. They had to be charged with a crime and convicted at a jury trial before they could be sent to prison. Before, kings could arrest people for no reason at all. Required everyone, even the king, to obey the law! ***How did Habeas Corpus affect the rights of citizens?

5. Changes after Magna Carta Inspired people to come up with more ways to limit the king’s power. Parliament- the law-making body that governs England today Worked to secure and protect people’s rights. Demanded that judges be free of royal control 1600s king agreed to free the courts of his council
