3 Magna Carta 1215- nobles force king to respect their rights. Middle of a field called Runnymede near London Made King John approve a document they had written Magna Carta- document listing rights that the king could not ignore. Latin “Great Charter”

4 Effects of Magna Carta Required king to honor certain rights. Habeas Corpus “you have the body” Meant that people could not be kept in jail without a reason. They had to be charged with a crime and convicted at a jury trial before they could be sent to prison. Before, kings could arrest people for no reason at all. Required everyone, even the king, to obey the law! ***How did Habeas Corpus affect the rights of citizens?

5 Changes after Magna Carta Inspired people to come up with more ways to limit the king’s power. Parliament- the law-making body that governs England today Worked to secure and protect people’s rights. Demanded that judges be free of royal control 1600s king agreed to free the courts of his council

6 Questions to answer Under Magna Carta, who had to obey the law? Why was the signing of Magna Carta so important?

7 The Hundred Years’ War Magna Carta had no effect outside England. Outsiders wanted political and social changes as well.

8 The Course of the War 1328- King of France died with no sons, men claimed his throne. One was French, the other was the king of England…in the end though, French man became king. English king did not like that! Few years later he invaded France Became known as the Hundred Years’ War English armies did well at first. However, a peasant girl, Joan of Arc, rallied the French troops. English captured and killed her but it was too late. The French drove the English out by 1453

9 Results of the War Changed the government in England and France England, Parliament’s power grew b/c king needed Parliament’s approval to raise money to pay for the war. France, king’s power grew. During war, he became popular w/nobles
