2 Overview of the Gateway Essay Social Studies essays will be graded on: – How well you answer the question, support your ideas, and make connections (focus, development, analysis) – How well you used documents and outside information as factual support (knowledge) – How well you organize, use transitions, and develop an intro/conclusion (organization) – How well you use grammar, spelling, punctuation, citations (conventions)

In Britain this " middle class risk mentality " existed; in the rest of Europe it did not. 11 Document F The development of the railway stimulated the economy in two important ways. First, cheap and efficient transportation lowered the carriage cost of goods. This meant that goods were cheaper in the shops and this increased the demand. The increase in demand led to the expansion of factories which required more energy. The need for coal grew because it provided power for the factory engines, steam powered ships and steam locomotives. Second, the demand for iron increased. |Iron was needed to make the railway tracks, steam locomotives and the giant Watt steam engines that provided energy to run factory machinery. —Iron and Steel Manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution
