2.  Sydney Funnel Web spiders are found 160 kilometres from the centre Sydney. Their favourite places to hide are in clothing, equipment that is stored in a garage, any type of shed, sandpits and also in pools.

4.  Ten minutes after a person is bitten by a Sydney Funnel Web Spider the first symptoms start. The first symptom is numbness around the tongue and mouth. Next the person will have spasms of the tongue and the heart rate will rapidly increase. Nausea and vomiting will soon start along with sweating and salivation. The victim will then become agitated and soon find it difficult to breath. They may become confused and not be able to concentrate. By this stage the victim may be in a coma and the blood press will rise dramatically. The muscles will begin to twitch. At this stage the possibility of death is extremely high.

5.  Funnel-Web spiders come from the family Hexathelidae. There are two genera, Hadronyche and Atrax. Description  The Sydney funnel webs diet consists of other bugs and insects.  It is considered a un common spider but is a rare species because it is only found in Sydney.   Funnel-webs are large black spiders with a shiny head/thorax. The body may range from 1.5 cm up to more than 5 cm long depending on the species.   Female funnel-web spiders are stockier than males, with shorter legs and a bigger abdomen, which may be brown or bluish. The eyes are small and closely grouped, the fang bases extend horizontally from the front of the head and the long fangs lie parallel underneath (do not check this on a live spider!).   Funnel-web spiders live in burrows in sheltered positions in the ground, or in stumps, tree trunks or ferns above the ground. Their burrows are lined with a sock of opaque white silk and several strong strands of silk radiating from the entrance. Although both genera are dangerous, it is Atrax, which is associated with human fatalities.. The Sydney Funnel-Web’s habitat is restricted to the Sydney area, as well as adjacent areas to the north and south. The funnel-web spiders and the Australian red back spider are considered to be the two most poisonous spider species in Australia.  There are about 40 species of funnel-web spider belonging to either the Hadronyche or Atrax genus

6. People are usually bitten on a limb. Immediate action should be taken to apply a presser bandage and immobilise the bitten limb using a splint. Restrict the victim's movement. Capture the spider for positive identification. Do not wash venom off the skin, as retained venom will assist identification. Seek medical attention urgently.
