2 Prisoners must wear a triangle so the guards can identify their background. Twenty-three thousand German and Austrian Roma (Gypsies) were sent to Auschwitz. 20,000 were killed here. July 1, 1937; Martin Niemoeller is one of the founders of the Confessional Church. He was arrested by the Nazies. His famous quote is "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me." Prisoners of the Camp

5 Camps were used for forcing “enemies of the state” to work in camps near industrial plants for economical growth. The main reason for labor camps was to help restore Germanys economic growth after their defeat in the battle of Stalingrad. The main two camps were Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Many of the prisoners at these camps were worked all day and until death. For you to be eligible to work you had to be the ages of 18- 45 and a Jewish male. If you did not meet these requirements you were sent to the gas chambers. Forced Labor
